Luke 17:11-19 “The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving”

Luke 17:11-19 “The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving”

Romans 7 ends with a prayer of thanksgiving: “I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Pastor Jeff took this Sunday to focus on a powerful message of Thanksgiving. The Bible says Thanksgiving is God’s will for your life (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Sometimes it feels like a sacrifice, but we are called to do it anyway.

Luke 17 is the story of ten men who had a lot to give thanks for. They were outcasts—the scourge of society. Leprosy was an incurable disease. All ten were healed but only one returned to give thanks to God.

They had heard about Jesus and the healing he had provided for others and they cried out for mercy. And Jesus gave them a simple command, “Go show yourselves to the priest.” The only reason you would show yourselves to the priest was if you had already experienced healing. They had to act in faith. In the same way, God tells us in His word things that we are to do by faith. We have to obey whether we understand it or not, and whether we agree with it or not.

We should be as quick and intentional in giving thanks as we are in asking for the Lord’s help and intervention.

  1. Whatever is going on in your life, know that God is sovereign. (Proverbs 16:9, Jeremiah 10:23)
  2. God loves you and is always looking out for your eternal benefit. Whatever is going on in your life, He is using it to make you more like Jesus.
  3. Give thanks because God is wiser than you are.
